Local Services Ads vs Google Ads Search — which UK service businesses should fund first.
For UK trades, home services, and eligible local categories, Local Services Ads (LSA) and Google Ads Search are different products with different lead economics — not two flavours of the same PPC knob. LSA sells Google-screened, often pay-per-lead demand with Guarantee framing where available; Search sells auction-based control over queries, creative, landing pages, and Smart Bidding. Owners who “pick one” without comparing cost per booked job usually either starve brand Search or overpay for unstaffed LSA leads. Use this matrix to decide sequencing, overlap rules, dispute/CRM hygiene, and when “cheap LSA leads” are still the wrong primary channel — especially beside map pack demand that neither product fully owns. The goal is booked jobs on allowable CAC, not winning an argument about which Google product feels cheaper this month.
| Dimension | Local Services Ads (LSA) | Google Ads Search |
|---|---|---|
| What you are buying | Leads (and related contact intents) from a Google Local Services surface — often pay-per-lead / lead-unit pricing with eligibility, screening, and category rules. You buy access to people who chose a screened provider list, not classic keyword auctions. The “product” includes profile trust signals and inbox ops, not just media. | Clicks (and call assets) in Search auctions for the queries you bid on. You buy attention on specific intent; you convert that attention on your site, phone, or WhatsApp stack. The “product” is controllable demand capture — quality depends on your structure, ads, landers, and conversion definitions. Different unit economics — do not copy Search CPA onto LSA blindly. |
| Eligibility & setup friction | Category, licence, insurance, background checks, and Google Screened / verification requirements apply. Not every UK trade or niche qualifies. Setup can take days to weeks, and ongoing compliance is real work. Inventory also varies by town — strong in some UK metros, thin in others. | Any business can open a Google Ads account and launch Search. Barriers are tracking quality, budget, and ops discipline — not Google Screened paperwork. You can be live the same day and still be unprofitable if measurement is soft. If you are not eligible for LSA, this compare ends — fund Search + Local SEO. |
| Query & creative control | Limited. Google matches job types and location to your profile; you do not run classic RSA keyword themes, pin headlines, or full search-terms hygiene the Search way. Offer nuance (package ladders, emergency vs planned) is harder to express than on a dedicated landing page. | Full keyword, match type, RSA, negatives, sitelinks, and landing-page control. Best when margin depends on which exact services, modifiers, and geos you buy — and when message match to a lander is part of conversion rate. Search wins when query control = profit control. |
| Lead quality patterns (UK services) | Often strong for phone-intent local jobs when screening is real — but still includes tyre-kickers, out-of-area contacts, price shoppers, and disputes you must manage in the LSA inbox. Quality varies by category competition, review strength, response speed, and how ruthless you are about credits. | Quality tracks your structure, ads, landers, and conversion definitions. High-intent “service + town” queries can outperform LSA when tracking and message match are tight; soft form primaries make Search look busy while booked jobs stay flat. Call-duration floors matter for UK trades. |
| Pricing model & cashflow | Typically charged per lead (or related lead units). Spikes when demand rises; disputes and credits matter to true CAC. Easier for some owners to understand than CPC — until lead volume outruns van capacity and every unanswered lead is burned fee. | CPC / Smart Bidding toward conversions. You can pace daily budgets tightly by campaign. Requires comfort with auctions, learning phases, and not judging brand Search on the same CPA as cold non-brand. |
| Tracking & CRM truth | Leads arrive through Google’s LSA flow. You still need CRM source tags so LSA jobs are not double-counted as Search call conversions or PMax forms. Dispute workflows, missed-call handling, and booking confirmation are part of measurement — not optional admin. | You own GTM, call tracking, WhatsApp, and offline imports. More flexible — and more ways to break measurement. Clean primaries are non-negotiable before Smart Bidding. Path coverage (forms vs calls) must match how UK customers actually book. Never casually merge LSA + Search into one Target CPA story. |
| Brand & profile leverage | Profile completeness, reviews, photos, response speed, and screening badges heavily influence wins. Weak profiles lose even with budget. Reputation ops are media ops. | Brand Search campaigns defend navigational queries; non-brand themes hunt new demand. Reviews and trust badges help conversion rate on landers but are not the same product as LSA screening. |
| Map pack & Local SEO overlap | Sits beside Maps/GBP demand but does not replace Local SEO. Organic map pack and LSA can both generate calls on the same phone — attribute carefully or finance will think “Google” is one bucket. | Search captures typed intent including near-me modifiers; still does not replace GBP/map pack work. Coordinate geos, service categories, and offers with Local SEO so paid and organic are not fighting blind. Map pack remains a Local SEO job — not an LSA vs Search either/or. |
| Capacity & response speed | Unforgiving. Slow answer times waste paid leads and hurt profile performance. If your office cannot pick up or return LSA leads within minutes during booked hours, fix staffing before raising budget. | Also unforgiving for call assets — but you can shape hours, ads, and landers to match capacity. Dayparting and budget caps help when the diary is full, and you can pause themes without dismantling an entire LSA profile. |
| Multi-location / multi-van UK operators | Needs clean service-area settings and routing discipline. Mis-set areas create out-of-radius junk leads you will dispute forever. | Supports location-aware campaigns, geo presence settings, and landers per branch — with the same structure discipline as any multi-location Search account. |
| Best primary use case (UK) | Eligible trades/home services that want screened lead volume and can staff phone response; categories where LSA inventory is meaningful in your towns; owners willing to run disputes and CRM tags weekly. | Always-on capture of branded + high-intent queries; categories or geos where LSA is thin/unavailable; businesses that need landing-page offers, package ladders, emergency vs planned themes, or multi-service control LSA cannot express. |
| Worst primary use case | Ineligible categories; slow responders who burn lead fees; owners who refuse dispute/CRM hygiene; treating LSA as the only growth plan while GBP is neglected; comparing LSA cost-per-lead to Search blended CPA including brand. | Launching Search on soft form primaries with no call tracking; ignoring brand defense; using Search alone to replace map pack when Local SEO is the real gap; pausing Search entirely because LSA “feels cheaper.” |
| PMax / Demand Gen interaction | Keep LSA goals separate. Do not let PMax soft forms and LSA phone leads blur into one “Google leads” KPI without channel tags. LSA is not fixed by turning on PMax. | Search remains the foundation under PMax. Add PMax only after tracking and Search health — and still keep LSA attribution distinct if both run. Demand Gen is a different job again (attention, not screened local leads). |
| GDPR / consent (UK) | Lead handling still needs lawful process in your CRM, retention rules, and call-recording disclosures where used. Screening does not remove your compliance duties to the customer. | Consent Mode, Enhanced Conversions, and call-recording disclosures affect match rates and what you can import offline. Plan UK measurement deliberately — do not copy a US-only tracking SOP. |
| Typical Zenos sequence (UK) | Step 2–3 for eligible categories — after GBP basics and response capacity; parallel with Search brand/high-intent, not instead of measurement. Weekly dispute + CRM source review is part of the SOW. | Steps 1–2 always — conversion truth, brand + high-intent Search structure, call tracking; LSA layered where eligible and staffed. PMax only after readiness. Sequence: measurement → Search foundations → LSA where eligible → PMax only if ready. |
| Reporting to a non-marketer owner | Show cost per booked job from LSA after disputes and no-shows, plus answer-speed SLA — not cost per raw lead. Celebrate booked jobs, not inbox volume. | Show cost per booked job by intent layer (brand vs non-brand), call answer rate, and CRM quality — not blended account CPA that hides brand subsidy. |
Decision tree for UK SMB owners
If you are not LSA-eligible in your category or towns: skip the LSA debate. Fund Google Ads Search (brand + high-intent), fix call/form tracking, and invest in Local SEO / GBP for map pack demand. Start from the United Kingdom market page for local proof, and treat map pack as a Local SEO workstream — Search cannot fully replace it.
If you are eligible and can answer phones fast: run LSA as a screened lead channel with CRM tags and dispute discipline — and still run Search for brand defense, services or geos LSA under-serves, and offers that need a landing page. Do not turn Search off “because LSA is cheaper per lead” until you compare cost per booked job after junk and no-shows. A week of dual CRM tagging usually ends the argument.
If Search is live but tracking is soft: fix measurement before scaling either channel. Soft primaries make Search Smart Bidding chase junk; messy double-counting of LSA and Search calls makes every CPA conversation fictional. Use the conversion tracking setup guide, call tracking for service businesses, Lead Path Coverage Score, and Google Ads Health Score before raising budgets.
If both channels are live and leads feel “the same”: force channel tags in the CRM for two weeks. You will usually find different close rates, ticket sizes, or spam mixes. Set separate allowable costs — break-even math still applies, but LSA and Search are different lead products. Intent-based account structure keeps Search readable while LSA runs beside it.
If response capacity is the bottleneck: do not buy more LSA leads to “grow.” Fix answer speed, routing, and diary capacity first. Paid media cannot outrun an empty van calendar — it only burns fees and damages profile performance.
If you want multi-surface reach (YouTube/Display) or Performance Max: keep LSA and Search foundations first. PMax does not replace LSA screening or Search query control. Read the Performance Max SMB playbook and only then score PMax Readiness. Keep LSA out of the same success metric soup as PMax view-through.
