Aggregators owned "electrician Sydney." We took page one for the jobs that actually margin.

Anonymized Sydney electrician and plumbing operator — technical SEO, commercial keyword mapping, and suburb pages measured in qualified calls, not blog traffic.

Outcomes calibrated from Zenos SMB benchmark data (Jul 2026); all case studies are anonymized composite engagements — not named clients.

01 · The Situation

This Sydney metro electrician and plumbing operator serves 18 suburbs from a single dispatch hub. Organic traffic existed (~2,400 sessions/month) but 90% landed on blog content — "how to reset a circuit breaker" style articles that never converted.

Commercial queries — "emergency electrician [suburb]," "licensed plumber near me," "switchboard upgrade Sydney" — were owned by HiPages, ServiceSeeking, and national franchises with stronger domain authority and citation footprints.

The operations manager wanted pipeline from SEO, not vanity traffic. Budget for Google Ads was already stretched; organic had to carry research-intent queries paid could not afford at Sydney CPCs.

02 · The Diagnosis

Technical debt blocking money pages. Crawl errors on 6 service URLs. LCP failing on mobile for /services/emergency-electrical. Only 40% of revenue pages passed Core Web Vitals at audit.

Keyword map inverted. Content calendar prioritized informational volume. Zero dedicated pages for high-intent suburb + service combinations.

Thin location architecture. One "Areas we serve" page listing 18 suburbs in a bullet list — no unique proof, no internal linking, classic doorway risk.

Local authority gap. GBP strong (4.6 stars, 48 reviews — approaching 60-review competitive benchmark for local-services) but site did not reinforce map pack with matching on-site local signals.

03 · What We Did

Weeks 1–3 · Technical foundation. Crawl fixes, indexation cleanup, CWV on service and location templates. Schema: LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ on commercial pages.

Weeks 4–6 · Revenue keyword map. 14 priority terms mapped to new or rebuilt URLs — emergency, switchboard, hot water, blocked drains — each tied to margin, not volume.

Weeks 7–12 · Suburb service-area pages. 18 unique pages — local proof (completed jobs, response times, suburb-specific FAQs), internal links from service hubs, no template spam. Pattern proven on a Welsh taxi operator case (#1 for core town query in four months) adapted to Sydney suburbs.

Weeks 8–12 · Authority and internal linking. Case snippets, review embeds, GBP-aligned NAP in footer. Blog content repurposed to support commercial pages — not compete with them.

04 · The Results

At 120 days:

  • 14 commercial keywords on page 1 — including 9 in top 3 for suburb + service combinations
  • Organic qualified calls +94% vs baseline — measured via call tracking on organic landing paths
  • 100% CWV pass on money pages
  • 18 indexed service-area pages — all unique, no manual actions or doorway suppression
  • Blog traffic flat; commercial page traffic +210% — intentional tradeoff

The operator now ranks above one major aggregator for "emergency electrician Inner West" — a query that previously sent 100% of clicks to directories.

05 · What's Next

Local SEO expansion to reinforce map pack for suburbs where organic ranks page 1 but map pack still shows franchises.

Content refresh cadence for seasonal queries — storm season electrical surge, winter hot-water failures — aligned to GBP posts and organic pages together.

We stopped publishing blog posts nobody searched for. Zenos built pages for the queries people type when their power goes out — and the phone started ringing.
